Slogans Y’all
We’ve been racking our brains for a Rabbit Hole slogan for months now and decided to turn it over to all of our creative friends and family. Here’s a random smattering of the oh-so-special ones we’ve received.
Every time you eat a cookie a rabbit gets its ears.
Oatmeal, better in a cookie than in a bowl.
These are the only cookies Chuck Norris eats.
Elves don’t have sh*t on rabbits.
Rabbits are fast. Eat our cookies slow.
Buy the cookies or the rabbit gets it!
Organic… Don’t you mean Oh Great!
Cookies taste better than rabbits.
… Umm… ???? Maybe we should keep searching…
Internet world, meet Bart.
OK, it’s due time we introduce you to the newest member of The Rabbit Hole team. Internet world, meet Bart.

Sure, he’s got some years on him, but don’t call him old, he’s vintage. (Yup, that’s a hand crank on the side!)

I’m a huge fan of our newly acquired Hobart 80 quart L-800 mixer because a. it’s probably older than me and still runs like a champ and b. I can now make 80 pounds of cookie dough in one batch.

So now you know the whole team. Actually we’ve yet to introduce you to Jenny, our hilarious, optimistic and endlessly creative intern, but she doesn’t like people taking pics of her, so we’ll have to be sneaky about it.
Glad we’re all acquaintances now,
Hannah
Pics from the costume contest
A few weeks ago, our friends at Simon Gallery in Morristown hosted a Halloween costume contest for all the kiddies in town and we were there to hand out wholesome, organic cookies rather than typical sugar-loaded candy.
Check out some of the adorable costumes we saw and a couple ridiculous pictures of Mahina and I in our Halloween gear:

Sometimes I wish Halloween came more than once a year… maybe tomorrow I’ll wear a green man suit to the office! (Any Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans out there?)
Have a good one y’all.
Garbage patch kids
Have you heard about the Pacific Ocean garbage patches?

I hadn’t until a few days ago and was shocked because I consider myself pretty “up” on environmental atrocities/news. No one likes preachy environmentalism, so in an effort to not sound like a total tree hugging psycho, I will restrain myself from writing all the horrors of plastic and let you look into it on your own if you feel so inclined. In a nutshell, there is a sludgey mess of decomposing plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean (accounts dispute over the size, which has been said to be anywhere between the size of Texas to twice the size of the continental U.S.) and it’s growing as plastics continue to be used and discarded.

If you haven’t seen pictures, read articles, or watched videos about this issue, do so. And get mad. Or sad, or whatever you get. Just promise us one thing: please don’t litter. I think you can handle it.

Here’s a link to an amazingly informative/scary/entertaining/sometimes hilarious series of videos about a crew who went out to research and report on “Garbage Island”: http://www.vbs.tv/watch/toxic/toxic-garbage-island-2-of-3
We throw stuff out that can’t biodegrade + it ends up in the ocean + fish eat it + we eat fish = we eat our own trash.
Ugh,

Art, art, more art
Hello again.
I’ve got art on my brain. Sometimes it’s the art of baking… dropping cookies neatly onto a gleaming silver cookie tray, making sure each little dough dollop has precisely the right amount of chips or chunks of fruit or ginger. Right now, though, I’ve got more traditional art popping up in my brain, like a slide projector possessed. A few days a week I work at a public university’s art galleries, so if it’s not cookies, or my own work, art is where my head’s at.
This weekend, while visiting a friend in Boston, I stumbled off the blustery Fall sidewalk and into the Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge to spend the next couple hours sifting through used art books in the basement. My favorite find was a huge book, the kind that you place on the coffee table and it overshadows the table, itself becoming your new tabletop. This ten pound monster was a collection of paintings and mixed media work by the New York based artist Alexis Rockman. I cracked open the book into my lap on the dingy carpet floor and was immediately entranced, flipping page by page, astounded by each new eye present. He paints animals and plants with astounding detail in spectacular arrangements–part fantastical field guide, part two-dimensional melodramatic diorama. I can’t explain in words… you’ll just have to check out a couple for yourself… see more of his work at http://alexisrockman.net/work/projects/. The first one below is a comment on genetically modified farming and breeding. GMOs=terrifying and Rockman’s painting=hilarious.

Now that I’ve started, might as well devote this post to environmentally-focused art. Enjoy!
Phil Ross utilizes live plants, fungi and other organic materials to create his work. See more at http://www.philross.org/.

Andy Goldsworthy creates outdoor sculptures by rearranging materials on-site and then documenting the project. http://www.rwc.uc.edu/artcomm/web/w2005_2006/maria_Goldsworthy/TEST/index.html

One more: Fritz Haeg is making “animal estates” and “edible estates” ie. birdhouses and gardens, but they are much more than that. See below and see more at http://www.fritzhaeg.com/.

It blows my mind that the art world is accepting mushrooms, birds’ nests and leaves as art, but I love it.
Have fun out there, cookie-eaters and blog-readers.

excited about average
So my new favorite website is www.mylifeisaverage.com. My little brother showed me the site a couple days ago and I have been obsessed with it ever since.
I think why I’m so intrigued by this site isn’t necessarily how hilarious it is or its many, many references to Harry Potter (I wish I could attend Hogwarts). But, whether it was intended or not, that simple website screams present-minded thinking. I was reading through pages and pages of strangers’ “average” daily moments and realized how much I’ve been missing over the past few months. With so much work to do, my lack of relaxation time was starting to weigh on me. Even an exciting day was hard to get out of bed for. But regardless of my exhaustion or laziness, neither are reasons to be oblivious to all the silliness going on around me. I feel like mylifeisaverage.com is a modern-day interpretation of the old saying, “don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.”
As a species, humans are totally out of control. I’m so baffled each day by our differences/qualities/abilities. But now it’s nice to know we can collectively blog about all the funny, average things we do.
till next time, mahina

High Fructose Corn Syrup: what’s the deal?
Hey, me again, Hannah.
Mahina found this hilarious video today, spoofing those ridiculous corn syrup commercials. Check it out!
For more information (in a slightly more intellectual form) about why HFCS is the worst, nastiest, downright yuckiest thing you could eat, go to: http://www.helium.com/knowledge/19112-the-dangers-of-high-fructose-corn-syrup
Planning for… right now?
Hi all.
I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Hannah, co-owner and baker extraordinaire of The Rabbit Hole! You have heard from my dear friend and business partner, Mahina, a couple times already so I figured it was due time for me to write a blurb.
Mahina and I have been swamped lately with all the preparation and planning the launch of “Spilled Milk organic cookies” has entailed. However, we just found a new kitchen right here in Jersey and baked there for the first time last night! What a joy to finish up a long haul of baking to be home and in bed less than a half-hour afterwards! In the past, we baked out of New York, so we’re thrilled to find somewhere close to home and connect with another local business.
There’s always work to do when your company is a two-person show. After allowing ourselves to sleep in for a bit this morning, it was back to work. Amidst the massive slushy snowflakes and rain falling from the sky, I sent press kits out to foodies, bloggers, magazines and local papers. Also contacted local businesses to offer Spilled Milk cookies as trick-or-treat treats, rather than high fructose corn syrup and preservative-laden traditional candy. (That’s right, kids! If you little ghosts and princesses, Hannah Montanas and Spidermans head to Morristown or Boonton this Halloween, you could get free organic cookies!)
Lately, my head is constantly thinking of the future–something I have been striving for years to retrain my neurons not to do. I want to be here and now, aware of every sensation of these passing seconds. Focus on each bite of a meal, each raindrop that hits my face, each thought that passes through my wacked-out, hyper-observational mind… but it’s hard, especially hard when you have bills to pay, balance sheets to keep in mind, stores to contact, more products to launch, a wedding to plan, holidays quickly approaching, art to make, etc. So I just wanted to say “I feel you,” cookie-eaters and blog-readers. Life is entirely overwhelming some days. It seemed like it might be one of those days for me today, but rather than focusing on the infinite to do list, I tackled one project at a time and just slowed down. I think we get confused sometimes, thinking that if we do everything as fast as possible, it’ll all get done and then one day we’ll be able to relax. But in my experience, that day doesn’t come. There are more emails tomorrow, there’s always going to be more. We just need to relax through each obligation and enjoy all the little things going on in our crazy, crazy lives.
OK, enough. I’m no bodhisattva. Just wanted to share some of my obsessive thoughts with you and maybe some resolution, too. This is what The Rabbit Hole is all about. Taking chances, trying new things, being assertive and ambitious, but enjoying the little things along the way. Like it says on our packaging: new socks, morning coffee, a genuine compliment. I’m grateful for The Rabbit Hole and I hope our cookies make your day a little better, too!
Sometimes, like today, when I’m feeling totally future focused, I listen to these amazing talks by our friend Josh at Dharma Punx NYC. Next time you have a few minutes, put one of these on and just listen. They are downloadable, too so you can listen in the car or on your ipod. Enjoy!

Where Does the Time Go?
It’s officially fall, a week ago. Is it seriously October already? So much has happened over the last few months; I can’t believe the last time I wrote was in July.
First and foremost, the newest member of my family was born! Everybody please welcome Miss Deena Nihiokalani Gannet to the world. She was born September 14th, healthy, adorable and with a full head of hair, immediately styled into a mohawk. Check her out under “Things we love” on the website, www.therabbitholebakeshop.com. How cute and perfect is she?
In other news, Hannah successfully completed exhibiting her project in one of chashama’s unconventional, wonderful window spaces in New York City. Congrats! Check out her new photos at www.hannahcraft.com.
And with our cookies, progress is happening! It’s of course slower than Hannah & I would like, but everything is coming together. Our packaging should be printed this week (fingers crossed) and soon we will be handing out cookies galore. Come find us at the Morristown Fall Festival this Sunday, October 4th for some samples!
I’m sure before I know it, the depths of winter will be upon us. But for now, i just want to enjoy the season at hand… Autumn, oh how I love you and your crisp, fresh air, your smells of pumpkin spice and cloves, your warm flannel shirts and heavy blankets to curl up under, your weird and scary costumes. I hope everyone (all two of you reading this) enjoys a bit of her magic – let’s go apple picking!
Oh, and as always I leave you with a song…
The xx – Basic Space
